The Patriot defense came to play in the championship game, only allowing 7 points in the first half while Hartfield averaged 49 points a game. The offense struggled in the first half but Billy Puckett launched a 56-yard bomb to Gardner Young to tie things up with 11 seconds left in the second quarter. The score was seven to seven at half.
Following the break the Prep defense held the Hartfield offense off the board in the 3rd quarter, but with just over a minute into the fourth quarter, the Hawks scored again to give them the lead; the extra-point was no good, making it 13-7.
Prep took the lead back with under five minutes remaining in the game. Puckett punched the ball in on the ground from a few yards out, and the Patriots led 14-13 with 4:37 remaining. Hartfield scored late to take the lead. The Hawks attempted to go for the two-point conversion to extend the lead, but were unsuccessful, making the score 19-14 with 1:05 to go.The Patriot offense attempted to take the lead and Hartfield recovered a fumble to end the game.
The Patriots finished the year 12-1 and accomplished many things during the year. The Patriots defeated the defending 5A MAIS state champion, defending 6A MAIS state champion, and the defending 6A MHSAA state champion all in one single season. The Patriots had an undefeated regular season. This team set many records that may never be broken.
