We as a Sentry Staff believe that the current state of Christmas movies are getting worse as a whole, and that there needs to be more new, original ideas released that more envelop the Christmas spirit. For the past 20 or so years, there really hasn’t been a new Christmas movie that has everyone talking. Unlike Halloween movies, Christmas movies can only be watched in a certain time and season, whereas most people can turn on a Halloween movie even if they’re in the middle of sometime like February.
According to 5 top 10 Christmas movie lists, from Collin Street Bakery to USA Today, no Christmas movie had been younger than The Polar Express, which came out in 2004. That doesn’t mean some people don’t like newer Christmas movies, it’s just that none of those movies have any cultural significance that the classics do.
With the new Red One movie coming out that is stacked with many popular actors, such as Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, and Netflix making their own version of romantic Christmas movies, these haven’t really been talked about that much. For example, for its first opening weekend, Red One had only made 32 million of its 250 million dollar budget.
In conclusion, no remakes will probably ever beat classic Christmas movies such as Elf, A Christmas Story, Home Alone, or National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. The amount of money or budgeting will still not get people to get up and go see these remakes. Christmas movies are getting worse as a whole, and most production companies need to realize that most of their Christmas movies will probably fail at the box office, and fail to have no cultural significance as the classic Christmas movies have.
