A Complete Unknown was worth watching. If you are a Bob Dylan fan or are familiar with his discography or history, it becomes even more worthwhile.
This Biopic explored the journey of Bob Dylan from a young, naive folk singer to a world-renowned musician and significant historical figure.
Timothée Chalamet’s performance made Dylan convincing, and his scenes added to the persona and atmosphere of the movie. Performances by Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, and Monica Barbaro also stood out to me as well-rounded and nuanced.
As someone who has listened to and enjoyed Bob Dylan’s music in the past, I find the live-audience-performance scenes to be the most enjoyable. These scattered performances were used as both a progression point for the plot and a reflection of the characters as they developed. The live performances sung by Timothée Chalamet conveyed what the characters were experiencing satisfyingly, and the music was the cherry on top.
The interactions between characters and the relationships on display gave an intriguing and entertaining development of characters as the movie progressed. Scenes where it was Bob Dylan being a snarky or annoying character underscored the reality behind the movie. I sometimes forgot I was watching a biopic and just got lost in the characters and overall atmosphere of the film.
The only downside of the movie was the Marvel-esque corny one-liners scattered sparsely throughout the story. It really took me out of the experience as I subconsciously recognized the odd or cringe-worthy dialogue. Besides that, it was a minor blemish on an otherwise enjoyable movie.
Another personal highlight of the movie is the brief yet memorable montage sequences. These were some of the more enjoyable scenes, effectively and satisfyingly moving the plot.
I personally enjoyed Bob Dylan’s arc from a young aspiring folk musician into a widely acclaimed, somewhat egotistical rockstar. This complexity of the character only benefited the realism of the story, with the nuanced development of the character highlighting the realness of the events portrayed in the movie.
This movie is an amazing watching experience, especially if you are a Bob Dylan fan. Suppose you enjoy excellent live performances of great songs and top-tier performances from a great cast, or you are just a fan of Bob Dylan’s music. In that case, this movie will provide quite an excellent viewing experience.
