With graduation fast approaching, many Prep seniors are looking forward to what lies ahead. For Preston Marion, this is the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
Preston Marion has always harbored a passionate interest in art. In elementary school, Preston doodled during classes, drawing whatever he could, whenever he could. Oftentimes during recess, he would always resort to drawing with chalk instead of other activities. As his work was sent home from school, teachers often commented on his lack of school ethic that was juxtaposed with an interesting, definitive artistic ability.
As soon as he reached high school, he took action on this natural talent of his. Preston filled his schedule with art classes, including AP art. Throughout his artistic career, his work highlighted his ability to draw articulate and random designs with the same concept behind all of them.
In addition, Preston has taken a strong liking to film. As the founder of the Jackson Prep film club, Preston has tried to spread this passion throughout. According to his Letterboxd account, Preston has watched 1,178 movies this year, adding to his film repertoire day-by-day on what he views as a good film. After school, he finds entertainment in diving into new films, with most of his free time spent on this activity. Marion has proven his love for film this year, including filming and directing the 2024 Patriot Pack Video, as well as making private films on the side.
Initially with intentions for Ole Miss to major in their film program, Preston also applied to other film schools outside of Mississippi, including University of North Carolina School of the Art, as said above. University of North Carolina School of the Arts has a designated, specialized, film program, which includes a selective process for admission. Upon getting in, Marion didn’t initially know he would be able to attend; It was pricey. But upon investigation, close to the price of Ole Miss. Preston’s parents soon surprised him that they would allow him to attend, giving him more love for film than he had in the first place.
In a recent interview, Preston said, “I’m super excited to be attending UNCSA next year for film. Film has always been my passion and attending this program will be very beneficial for my creative journey.” Be sure to watch for Preston Marion on the big screen.
