WHO’S YOUR HERO? For Sam Leggett it’s Dave Thomas
From Issue 7
Heroes don’t always wear capes or have superhuman powers. A hero is a person admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Everyone has a role model that could be compared to a hero. Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from life-saving physicians to political leaders to parents.
Sophomore Sam Leggett’s hero is Dave Thomas, the founder of the fast food chain Wendy’s. Sam admires his ability to create the “greatest fast food restaurant” and his service-like attitude.
Dave Thomas opened the first Wendy’s in Columbus, Ohio in 1969. At first it was not a huge success, but after his dedicated attention towards the chain, it became well known and popular.
In 1992, Dave Thomas founded the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption to help children in foster care find permanent homes. Dave was adopted as a young child and wanted to help children in similar situations like he was.
Dave Thomas put others first and wanted to help his community. Sam remarked, “It shows me that even though there may be things more fun I can do, service should definitely be a big part of my life.”
When asked why Dave Thomas was his role model, Sam commented, “Good ole Dave is definitely a role model because he gives a good example through his leadership, charitable life, and the opportunities he provides many people with.”
