Jackson Prep Fencing Club, sponsored by Ms. Jane Zhu, started during the second semester last year and has grown much since then.
The Fencing Club is a group of middle and high school students at Prep that meet on Tuesdays in the MPR to practice. They are coached by Mr. David Williams who has coached multiple different teams over the years, including coaching in the Paralympics.
A few members of the club have competed at state tournaments and are involved in clubs outside of the school as well.
On November 8, the club held its own tournament in the Manning Center at Prep. Eighth-grader Lucos Ma, won the gold medal for foil fencing.
Students have also competed in a tournament held in Oxford.
Fencing Club is a unique club that Prep offers and a great opportunity for students to be involved in one of the lesser-known sports.
Freshman Baxter Hughes, a club member, said, “I’m doing a lot better now that I’m doing it weekly and not just every once in a while.”
