Beatle-mania. During the 1960s, that was the word for how popular the Beatles were. Everyone knew about them : George, Paul, John, and Ringo. Amazon Prime released a documentary on one of the four, that being Paul McCartney. The story follows Paul after the Beatles breakup, and the 10 or so years where he was getting his life in order and starting a new band : Wings. Paul is talking through most of it, with other roles from friends and family. As someone who listens to the Beatles every now and then, I actually quite enjoyed it.
The whole title, Paul McCartney : Man on the Run, is pretty creative. Paul is the one blamed for breaking up the band, and the only way he wanted to get away from all that was to go on the run, hence the title. Most of the documentary is about him talking about getting in touch with music, and enjoying the simpler things in life. I mean, the place he runs away to is a farm in the middle of Scotland. He’s happy there, and I think that really shows something about human nature. Paul was a millionaire, I mean, he was part of one of the most influential bands of all time, but he didn’t continue to live a lavish lifestyle. He went back to simple stuff, raising sheep and settling down with his wife, Linda. Sometimes, people don’t need everything to be happy.
Besides that, I think the timeframe is weird. This is supposed to show the middle part of his life. Hence, it only goes up to 1980. I think the documentary could’ve been much more interesting if you kept going with his life, and taken it to the present day. Regardless, it still is pretty good. There are some great songs in which they explain the origin, and the overall vibe of it is fun, until it gets into Paul’s arrest and John Lennon’s death.
Personally, I like it a lot. There may be some weird timeframe issues to me, but I felt that I learned a lot about Paul and just music in general. I’d give it like a 7.5/10; it’s pretty good, but not the best documentary I’ve ever seen.
