For all users of Spotify and Apple Music, the start of December means something special. Not only does Christmas music begin, but so does the “wrapped.” “Wrapped” is your end of the year statistics, for your most played song, album, podcast, and artist. Many students around Prep are talking about theirs, and it can be interpreted in many different ways. Some are embarrassed, some are proud. For example, Senior Cameron Clune was not very happy about his, because he racked up so many minutes for Travis Scott at the beginning of the year, but barely listened to him near the end.
To call Spotify Wrapped a cultural phenomenon is not entirely crazy, everyone that I know loves to talk about it and it’s interesting to see how much time is spent just listening to music. Music is in so many different lights and genres, and you can find people with different and similar tastes all around Prep.
It has also been theorized that some people will listen to certain music to help make their “wrapped” look less embarrassing. This isn’t entirely crazy, but it is concerning because the point of music is to enjoy music, no matter what genre.
In my opinion, I enjoy Spotify Wrapped. I’m not as mainstream as the top 20 artists or songs, but I still like the popular stuff. Alex Guidry’s most played song was Ventura Highway by America, Parker Ingram’s was You Shook Me all Night Long by AC/DC, and Ridge Gamblin’s most played artist was Megan Moroney. This shows Spotify Wrapped is vast and different, which adds to this excitement this time of year.
