Jackson Prep’s Government and Civics club was a legislative success at the 61st Youth Legislature Conference run by L.E.A.D. Mississippi.
Since 1960, L.E.A.D. Mississippi and its predecessors have run a Youth Legislature aiming to increase civic awareness across the state. Providing a unique experience, it occurs in downtown Jackson (and, many years, at the Mississippi Capitol itself, where students use the actual chambers).
The Prep delegation sent nine students this. They wrote bills about issues they believed were important.
Serving as legislative officers from Prep were Miriam Caballero and Caroline Jordan, who served as Secretary of the Senate and Clerk of the House, respectively.

Like the government, Youth Legislature can be rocky, but Prep definitely had their gold. Michael Balfour (11) and Caleb Hinton (9) were awarded Outstanding Representatives for their participation within the conference, while Anderson Payne (10) was among the Outstanding Senators. Additionally, Payne was elected to become the Senate Majority Leader for the 2026 session.
When asked about why he enjoyed Youth Legislature so much, Payne said that it was a great way to see others’ perspectives on issues he may not have considered. He also said that Youth Legislature has had a profound impact on his life and has allowed him to become a more confident person.

The next big event for the Government and Civics Club will be Model United Nations in the spring. No previous experience is required to participate. Interested students should talk to Mr. Hughes in room 102 in the upper school for more information.
