An infamous place for Prep’s preteens, the Red Slab is widely regarded as a popular spot for Prep middle schoolers. Because of its fun and sometimes wild atmosphere, the Red Slab is a significant part of Prep Middle School culture. Some would even say playing on the Red Slab is a rite of passage for fifth through eighth graders.
During activity period and lunch, middle schoolers rush out to “the slab” to play as many games as possible, with the most common ones being basketball and foursquare.
Seventh grader Zella Fulton said, “I feel energetic on the Red Slab, especially when I make a three pointer.”
Going to the Red Slab is a great way for students to get their energy out, especially after sitting through class for hours each day. Students have observed that they have more freedom playing on the Red slab compared to being on a playground in elementary schoo. “I like the freedom that I have in middle school going to the Red Slab compared to elementary school, where we were restricted to just the playground,” said eighth grader Jane Marie Johnston.
Because the Red Slab is so popular as a place to get out some energy and give their minds a break, it is integral to the culture and social lives of Middle Schoolers.
